After Melissa and Naiyah had a late night playing cards with some visitors, they woke up early in the morning to another day in Quzhou. Breakfast was noodles and eggs, and the family soon departed for school. First period at school was Math for Group A. It was hard to catch any words, but after the lesson ended, the group attended an English class. This class involved the group and asked them several questions. One of the questions that the group asked was about music. A Quzhou student asked about what kind of music the Pingry students liked. Beyonce was one of the answers, but the Quzhou students did not recognize her name. This merited a dance to "Crazy in Love" from Malcolm Fields. A Quzhou student even joined in! Next, the group tried to attend a Music class, but as final exams are right around the corner here in Quzhou, Music class was canceled. Not knowing what to do, Group A went back to the library and started a game of cards. In the middle of "President", the group was found and was assigned a different class. The Pingry students were asked questions in this class and asked some questions themselves.
After these classes, Group A met briefly with the teachers and Group B (the high school group). After the meeting, Group A attended an English class. They learned some poetry and sat amongst the students. They then taught another class some terms such as "ship", "yolo", "rap", "bro/broski/dude", "swag", "metal music" and "or nah". The Pingry group was soon taught some colloquial Chinese terms. After this interesting and fun class, Group A headed to lunch. The lunch was the usual: Chinese cuisine!
After lunch, the group went to the library where they chilled with some cards, and practiced the cups song. At about 2 pm, the Pingry students headed to a room on the third floor of the library for an open forum with rising 10th graders about school life. The students from Pingry presented about academics, sports, arts and extra-curricular activities. They also listened to the other school's presentation. After the open forum, the students went to the first floor of the library for tai chi practice. Though it was difficult for most, everyone found it to be a nice, calming way to end the day. After tai chi, a few students visited a convenience store next to the school. While some purchased different foods and drinks they had never tried before, others were very relieved to find some of the more familiar brands that they knew the taste of. Afterwards, the students went home. Malcolm enjoyed some delicious chicken, since he told his host family that's what he liked to eat most, as well as corn, lima beans, and vegetable dumplings. After dinner, Malcolm went on a walk throughout his entire village with his host mother and student, James. He got to see where most crops are grown, as well as some friendly stray animals. The walk allowed him to get a first hand view of the life in a Chinese village and compare it to life in America.
As we are all fine here, we hope everyone is doing well at home.
